Eltisley v The Philanderers, Wednesday 12th July

Yet another illiterate Philanderer discovered or maybe the word I am looking for is idle! Anyway your Leader is again forced to comment on a match at which he was not present and sadly not assisted over much by the scorebook which left Eltisley in a badly kept condition. Still that will do as a rant and I will switch to more or less what happened on the evening of 12th July.

It was not recorded who won the toss but The Philanderers, under the virgin captaincy of young Rob Gill, batted first. All seemed well at the beginning when openers Gill (43) & Paul Leary (34) put the innings onto a sound footing but sadly not followed by the rest of the side none of whom managed to break into double figures. Although it should be noted that John Burnett promoted to the heady heights of No. 8 hit his first 6 since 1997. Otherwise nothing of interest to report apart from the slow demise to 122 all out one ball short of the completion of 20 overs.

Having an uncompetitive total to defend the club seems to have made a half decent attempt to do so. Eltisley, heavily dependent on players from higher league Waresley so I am informed, stumbled along for a while in rather inept fashion with Mihir Chandrekar & Charlie Pearson taking 2 wickets each. The the home side’s No. 5 then arrived at the crease, smacked a fairly rapid half century and brought the game to an end on the final ball of the 19th over. Eltisley 123 for 6 wickets inflicted only the third defeat on the club this season. Overall we didn’t deserve to win but at the finish the margin of defeat was kept to reasonable proportion as far as I’m able to determine.
